01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
When you’re deciding what to order at Ikkon, its “World’s Best Nikujaga” is a natural place to start. One diner who enjoyed the nikujaga, kushikatsu and karaage with sake described all three as carefully prepared and gently flavoured. On another visit, the pickles and prepared side dishes also won praise. The signature dish can anchor the meal, with small plates added alongside.
For something fried, consider the karaage taro. One diner recommended eating it with salt, while another who ordered it with oden remembered the depth of the dashi broth. The daikon in the oden was a particular favourite in a separate account. You can build the meal around fried dishes, or add a warming, broth-based plate.
Other options include pork shiso rolls, fried lotus root and kushikatsu, making the menu suited to a dinner centred on nikujaga or an evening of sampling small plates. Drinks include draft beer, Kizakura hot sake and Tateyama (Honjozo). Ikkon is a Japanese restaurant in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City. It serves dinner from 17:00 until 0:00 the following day, Tuesday to Sunday, and is closed on Mondays.
